چکیده
We investigate the tensile stress in freely suspended nanomechanical string resonators, and observe a material-independent dependence on resonator length. compare strongly stressed sting resonators fabricated from four different material systems based amorphous silicon nitride, crystalline carbide as well indium gallium phosphide. The is found to increase by approximately 50% for shorter resonators. establish simple elastic model describe observed length of stress. accurately describes our experimental data. This opens perspective stress-engineering mechanical quality factor

Damping of nanomechanical resonators.
We study the transverse oscillatory modes of nanomechanical silicon nitride strings under high tensile stress as a function of geometry and mode index m≤9. Reproducing all observed resonance frequencies with classical elastic theory we extract the relevant elastic constants. Based on the oscillatory local strain we successfully predict the observed mode-dependent damping with a single frequency...

are well suited to such explorations. Their dimensions not only make them susceptible to local forces, but also make it possible to integrate and tightly couple them to a variety of interesting electronic structures, such as solid-state twolevel systems (quantum bits, or qubits), that exhibit quantum mechanical coherence. In fact, the most-studied systems, nanoresonators coupled to various supe...
متن کاملNoise processes in nanomechanical resonators
Nanomechanical resonators can be fabricated to achieve high natural resonance frequencies, approaching 1 GHz, with quality factors in excess of 10. These resonators are candidates for use as highly selective rf filters and as precision on-chip clocks. Some fundamental and some nonfundamental noise processes will present limits to the performance of such resonators. These include thermomechanica...
